My husband, Henk, said scholars report that the ancient historian Herodotus’ record is more credible than the story that Philippides died after running the distance to Athens. According to Herodotus, Philippides, known as the greatest runner in 490 B.C. Athens, was recruited to run the 70 miles southwest to Sparta to beg for reinforcements against the Persians, who
were approaching 26 miles to the east of Athens. Only partially successful, he then ran back to Athens the next day, for a 140-mile round trip. The following day he ran the 26 miles to Marathon to report to the Athenian army gathered there for battle that the Spartans would join them, but not for another nine days. Four days before the Spartans were to arrive, the Athenians were forced into battle, and even without reinforcement,
they miraculously defeated the Persians. After the surviving Persians fled by ship, the entire Athenian army ran (or ranwalked) the 26 miles back to Athens to defend the city itself. The Persians did in fact sail around to Athens and anchored offshore, but during the night they apparently reconsidered, for they then sailed eastward toward home. —By Carol Pechler
