    Friends of the Kilgore Public Library
    Annual Christmas Open House
    Even the most Grinch-like among us can agree that the Kilgore Public Library is beautiful 365 days a year, but starting in November, the staff of the library transforms it into a beautiful winter wonderland that even Scrooge could appreciate! The evenings guests enter through the beautiful arched doorway and immediately experience a beautiful snow landscape that is anchored by a snow-covered pine tree adorned with red birds and beautiful glass ornaments. From there, each room is adorned with its own unique and festive decorations. The meeting rooms heavy oak tables are literally covered with platters and platters of delicious homemade Christmas goodies. Special music performances are always a part of this festive family-friendly evening. For the smallest among us, the Citys own Santa (David Bond) makes the night complete. The Friends of the Library also provide a free picture with Santa and a free book for every child. The Library doesnt have a huge budget for the program. In fact, they rely on donations and assistance from the Friends of the Library to help purchase new decorations to keep the décor fresh and new each year. "We have to rely on our creative juices when the money isnt there for our unique ideas." said Linda Johnson, Library Director. Several years ago the staff used toilet paper cylinders to make over 300 huge snowflakes for the Childrens Room. They eventually had to make copies of the instructions for the patrons because they all wanted to make the cheap but beautiful decorations. The library staff does all of the decorating but depends heavily on the Parks Department to bring all of the trees and heavy boxes up from the basement and down from the attic. "We simply could not do this event without their cheerful and willing help. In fact, the outside derricks are always set up by their department" said Johnson. What started out as a dedication ceremony to celebrate the Librarys designation as an historical landmark over twenty years ago has progressed to one
