Soquel Creek Water District is a nonprofit, local government agency with a locally elected Board of Directors. The District provides water supply and water resource management to more than 45,000 customers within a 17-square mile area of midSanta Cruz County. The Board of Directors meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:00PM at the District's office at 5180 Soquel Drive. Out with the old, and in with the new
District's main replacement program benefits you in more ways than one
If it seems like we're constantly out digging up roads around town, you're right. During the past five years, the District has been busy replacing old, leaky, small diameter, corroding steel water mains. Thanks to the District's main replacement program, which is funded on a pay-as-you-go basis, over seven-and-one-half miles of water mains have been replaced in Soquel, Capitola, Aptos, Rio Del Mar and La Selva Beach. The majority of main replacement projects have involved replacing 2-inch diameter water mains with 6-inch mains. Sixinch diameter mains greatly improve fire flow, water quality and system reliability. Older water mains also tend to leak more, which can be a significant source of lost water. In addition, the District's maintenance crews must spend their time digging up and repairing the leaking pipes. By replacing the old water mains, the District is saving money and increasing operational efficiency to be more effective in other areas. For more specific information about your neighborhood, call the Engineering Department at 475-8500. Staff is available to answer questions about water quality issues, main replacement projects, fire hydrant flow capacity, water pressure, and other related topics. If you live in a neighborhood where new fire hydrants have been installed, we encourage you to check with your insurance agent to see if a reduction in fire insurance premiums is available due to increased level of fire protection now available.
